A GA4 Consultant Who Reads the Raw Data

GA4 will tell you what happened, sort of, eventually, in a report four menus deep. If your numbers don't match Shopify, your conversions look double-counted, or nobody in the business trusts the dashboard any more, I can help. I'm Matt, a freelance GA4 consultant based in North Wales, and I work from the raw event data, not the pretty charts.

What I Can Help With

GA4 isn't bad, it's just badly set up on most stores. A default install, three apps all firing their own events, and a dashboard nobody has trusted since launch day. Here's what I actually do about it.

Setup & Cleanup

Whether it's a fresh property or years of accumulated mess, I set GA4 up the way it should have been from the start. Sensible events, correct settings, junk stripped out.

Ecommerce Event Tracking

The full journey from view_item to purchase, firing once each, with the right values attached. Sounds basic. You'd be amazed how rarely it's true.

Discrepancy Investigation

GA4 says one thing, Shopify says another, Meta says a third. I find out which one is lying and why. Why GA4 doesn't match Shopify covers the usual suspects.

BigQuery Export

GA4's free export into BigQuery gives you every raw event, no sampling, no interface in the way. When two dashboards argue, this is what settles it. Source-of-truth analysis for stores that need real answers.

Reports People Understand

A handful of numbers the business actually uses, sent to the people who need them. If a report needs a training course to read, it's a bad report.

Conversion Tracking Tidy-Up

GA4 feeds Google Ads, and when the plumbing's wrong you get conversions counted twice and bidding decisions made on fiction. I make sure what the ad platforms see matches what actually happened.

Why a Freelance GA4 Consultant?

Analytics agencies will sell you a workshop, a roadmap and a retainer. Most stores just need someone who can find out why the numbers are wrong and fix them.

You Talk To Me

No account managers, no juniors, no being passed around. The person you speak to is the person digging through your event data.

Evidence, Not Guesswork

I check what the browser actually sent, not what a dashboard claims it did. That method once uncovered a store reporting growth that didn't exist.

No Contracts

Most GA4 work is a defined project with a fixed price agreed up front. If you want me around afterwards, that's month to month, leave whenever.

It's Your Property

Your GA4 property, your BigQuery project, your data. Full access from day one, everything documented, nothing held hostage.

How It Works

Diagnose first, fix second. Doing it the other way round is how most GA4 setups got into this state.

1

Have a Chat

Tell me what the numbers are doing, or not doing. Ten minutes is usually enough to know whether it's a quick fix or something deeper.

2

Start With a Tracking Audit

The tracking audit goes through GA4, Google Ads, Meta and Shopify and shows exactly what's double-counting, missing or lying. You get a written fix list either way.

3

Fix and Verify

I work through the fix list, then prove it worked, checking the raw events against Shopify's own order data, not just eyeballing a chart.

4

Make It Readable

Reports the business actually uses, and a plain-English handover so you understand what your own analytics is telling you.

What It Costs

GA4 work is a fixed project price, agreed up front once I've seen what state things are in. A number on this page would be a guess, and guessing is the thing I'm against. The tracking audit is the starting point, it tells us both exactly what needs doing before you commit to anything bigger.

Questions People Ask

Here are the ones I get most often. If yours isn't here, just ask.

A straightforward store, a few days. A setup with years of apps, plugins and old tags all firing over each other, a few weeks. The audit tells us which one you are before any clock starts, so the quote isn't a guess.

Usually a mix of consent settings, attribution windows, Shopify's checkout sandbox and duplicate or missing events. A gap of around 10-12% is normal, GA4 will never see everything. Consistently over 20% means something's broken. I've written up the full list of causes, and if the gap appeared the day your cookie banner went live, start with the consent mode guide.

Honestly, most smaller stores don't. It earns its keep when the numbers are disputed and you need a source of truth, or when the standard reports can't answer the question. The export is free to switch on and Google's free tier covers most stores, so it's usually worth having even if you rarely open it.

Yes, grudgingly. It's free, it's what Google Ads reads its signals from, and every alternative either costs money or has its own quirks. You don't have to love GA4, you just need it telling the truth.

Mostly ecommerce, and mostly Shopify because that's where the strangest problems live. But GA4 is GA4, WooCommerce, lead-gen sites and everything else have the same underlying plumbing, just different ways of breaking it.

Yes. Every project ends with a plain-English handover anyway, but if you want a proper session on reading your own reports, that's easily arranged. No jargon, no slides for the sake of slides.

Let's Have a Chat

Drop me a message or give me a ring. Tell me what your numbers are doing and I'll tell you honestly whether it's worth paying someone to fix.

More Than Just GA4

Fixing the measurement is usually step one. If the whole setup needs going through, start with the tracking audit, and if Safari and ad blockers are eating your data, server-side tracking is the longer-term fix. Affiliate numbers not adding up either? That's its own rabbit hole.

Once the numbers are honest, I can put them to work: Google Ads, Facebook advertising and ecommerce PPC. Based in Abergele, North Wales, working with businesses across the UK.
