Holywell is a market town of around 10,000 people, and it's one of the more unusual places I work in. It's known as the Lourdes of Wales because of St Winefride's Well, the oldest continually visited pilgrimage site in Britain, and that gives the town a mix you don't find anywhere else in Flintshire: a traditional High Street, proper industrial heritage down the Greenfield Valley, and a steady flow of visitors who arrive knowing exactly one thing about the town before they get here.

The business mix reflects that. There are shops and services trading on the High Street, manufacturers and trades on the industrial estates, and cafes, guest houses and attractions catching the visitor trade heading for the Well, Basingwerk Abbey and the Greenfield Valley heritage park. Those are three quite different audiences, and I've seen plenty of Holywell websites that try to speak to all of them at once and end up speaking to nobody.

Here's the honest bit: most Holywell businesses don't need a fancy website. They need one that loads fast on a phone, says clearly what you do and where you are, and shows up when someone in CH8 searches for your trade. A plumber in Holywell isn't competing with the whole of North Wales, they're competing with whoever else ranks for "plumber Holywell" and the surrounding villages like Bagillt and Greenfield. That's a winnable fight with a well-built site.

If you're on the visitor side of the town's economy, the job is different. Pilgrims and day-trippers to St Winefride's Well and the Greenfield Valley plan online before they travel, often from the other side of the country. Your website needs to answer their questions, look trustworthy, and make it dead easy to find you once they arrive. That's a content and structure problem as much as a design one, and it's exactly the sort of thing I enjoy getting right.

And practically speaking, I'm close. Abergele to Holywell is about 12 miles along the coast, roughly a 20 minute drive. So when I say I work with Holywell businesses face-to-face, I mean it.
